The right pump depends on the fluid, required flow or pressure, engine and electrical system, and the conditions where the vehicle, boat or equipment will operate. Use this checklist before comparing products in the pumps category.

Identify the pump application

Water pumps, fuel pumps, oil pumps and power-steering pumps solve different problems. Confirm the fluid, temperature range, contamination or corrosion exposure, mounting style and whether the pump is for a performance engine, race vehicle, workshop or marine system.

Compare flow, pressure and operating range

Review the manufacturer’s rated flow, pressure, head, speed, voltage and duty cycle. A higher number is not automatically better: excessive pressure can damage components, while insufficient flow can cause overheating, fuel starvation, lubrication problems or steering performance issues.

Check engine and system compatibility

Verify engine family, mounting pattern, shaft or pulley arrangement, fittings, hose size, inlet and outlet location, electrical connector and control requirements. For fuel systems, match the pump to fuel type, pressure regulator and injector demand. For cooling systems, confirm thermostat, bypass and radiator compatibility.

Plan the installation

Confirm what is included and what must be purchased separately. Check wiring and fuse requirements, priming, filtration, reservoir or tank placement, seal material, service access and any need for a relay, controller, cooler or bypass line. Marine applications require additional attention to corrosion, raw-water flow and safe fuel or exhaust routing.

Before you order

  • Fluid and application are identified.
  • Flow, pressure, temperature and duty cycle meet the system requirement.
  • Mounting, fittings, voltage and controls are compatible.
  • Filters, regulators, hoses, wiring and hardware are accounted for.
  • Product documentation and installation requirements are reviewed.
